I'm Michael Ertl and I'm a multimedia journalist.

I have worked for several TV and radio stations as well as news websites in Germany, Spain and the United Kingdom.

At the moment, I am writing for Empire magazine. I am also getting into interactive documentaries, data journalism and visualisation.

Television is my passion.

I learned to love the fast pace of television news and the challenge to give a comprehensive overview in a short time at German TV stations and NDTV in London.

On the other hand, I have experienced producing long-form documentaries as one of the most rewarding parts of my journalistic work.

There is nothing that matches reading the news on the air.

Except playing with all kinds of different sounds in features and documentaries.

Good journalism is speed and accuracy - and no field is faster than online journalism.

I have worked in Focus Online's multimedia newsroom, where different elements come together to tell compelling

However, web storytelling doesn't end there: Find samples of interactive web documentaries and data visualisations.

About me

Multimedia storyteller

I call myself a multimedia storyteller. By multimedia I don't only mean being able to produce TV or radio pieces and writing for print and online. The possibilities of the web go further: I have explored how to use videos in the digital age in an interactive web documentaries and through the use of data visualisations.

I have learnt my journalistic skills in TV, radio and online at a wide range of media organisations in Germany and the United Kingodom: from local television in Bavaria to the national public-service broadcaster BR, from being a newsreader and reporter for M94.5, a local radio station in Munich, to writing for Focus Online, one of Germany's most popular news websites.

I have an academic background in journalism and social sciences, excelling both in my undergraduate and Master studies.

My MA in Multimedia Journalism at the University of Westminster has not only equipped me with a critical understanding of journalistic ethics and media law, but also prepared me for 21st century storytelling.

During my BA in Communication Science at the Ludwig-Maximilians University Munich and Journalism at the San Pablo University in Madrid, I have learnt about the wider context of the media landscape and acquired writing and production skills as well as a thorough education in statistics.
